Liérganes, Cantabria

Las primeras referencias a Liérganes datan del s. IX y citan la existencia del monasterio de S. Martín, hoy desaparecido. Tras un largo periodo dedicada a la agricultura y a la ganadería, la población recibió un nuevo impulso hacia el s. XVII con la instalación de los primeros hornos de fundición del país. Su patrimonio refleja esa evolución y atesora un buen conjunto de palacios, entre los que destaca el soberbio conjunto de La Rañada y la Casa de los Cañones. Tampoco se debe pasar por alto el templo de S. Pantaleón, del s. XIV, la iglesia parroquial barroca, el añejo balneario y el puente Mayor. Además Liérganes evoca la famosa leyenda de un muchacho nacido en la localidad, cuya afición a nadar le convirtió en hombre pez. Un monumento junto al río Miera recuerda esta popular leyenda.
