Arenas de San Pedro, Ávila

La capital del valle del Tiétar aparece rodeada de un imponente circo de montañas y alberga el restaurado castillo de la Triste Condesa, que hoy preside el pueblo. Nació con intenciones defensivas pero acabó siendo residencia señorial y más tarde cárcel, cementerio y almacén. También destaca la enorme iglesia gótica con torre renacentista y el palacio neoclásico del infante Luis Borbón, inacabado y con un bonito jardín. Merece además una visita su plaza Mayor y el casco antiguo, en el que hubo un barrio árabe y otro judío y que incluye unas curiosas cuevas excavadas en la roca. A las afueras hay un bello puente del siglo XV sobre el río Arenas y el santuario de San Pedro de Alcántara, de un austero barroco.
